Day 3

5-11-22

I got to the aquarium at 9 this morning and jumped right into feeding and prepping meals for tomorrow. I learned about the backwash and filtration system in the tanks and how they keep the water fresh and healthy for the fish. For about half the tanks, we emptied a quarter of the water and added new water to prevent nitrate build-up and ammonia. I went to lunch and when I came back I took one of the lizards outside for an hour to get some fresh air and sun which was fun. He tried to run away a few times though. I then learned about water salinity, pH, and nitrate. In the lab, we did some tests on the water, and the pH was low in one of the tanks so we corrected it. I got a brief intro to the holding tanks, how the saltwater is made, how they move water, and where the dirty water goes. I finished up the day by cleaning the food prep room and moving shark eggs that were laid into a different tank to be monitored.

Time today: 6 hours

Time total: 10.5 hours
